Expos. Final Essay

Insightful Setback v. Self Sabotage
When success or reaching your goal is thought about, you might think about the final result, graduating from high school, or getting enough money for that new car. However no one thinks about failures that may occur during your journey to reach a goal. There are two courses of action that can be taken if an obstacle or failure is put in the way; either handle it with the perception of an insightful setback, or with a mind set for self-sabotage. I would much rather handle my failures using the insightful setback method, but people can often fall into self-sabotaging behavior with a simple pessimistic outlook. Insightful setback can be summed up as an instance when you understand your failure and learn from it, and self-sabotage is not using your judgment to keep moving forward and you just give up on your goal. “How to Turn Failure Into Success - The Way to Insightful Setbacks” and “Self Sabotage” both further explain how each work. Both methods of dealing with failure are similar, however, they differ greatly.
The article “How to Turn Failure Into Success – The Way to Insightful Setbacks” states the process of how to turn failure into accomplishment. Insightful setback is all about the way you look at your failures. If you look at failure as a friend, coach, or mentor you are using failure to the fullest. Let it teach you what not to do or what to fix. Look at it to forge your strength, through trial and error. A perfect example of this is the great scientist, Thomas Edison. Thomas Alva Edison, an American inventor from 1847-1931 invented many technological advancements, such as an early legislative vote recorder and telegraph devices. However, probably one of his most important discoveries was the light bulb, and the way that he discovered the light bulb is a perfect example of insightful setback. Thomas Edison tried over 10,000 times to create the light bulb and 9,999 times he failed and what he said was “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Edison is the master of insightful setback; his goal to make a light bulb had many obstacles in his way. Every time he failed he just kept moving forward, after each failure he learned a way not to make a light bulb, he just continued moving forward to his destination.
Self-sabotage is something that we do to ourselves; we do this when we feel that we don’t deserve good things to happen to us. As defined by www.yeartosuccess.com, Self-sabotage is a combination of thoughts, feelings, and actions that create a roadblock to success by working against your own self-interests. Learn the reasons why so many fall victim to self-sabotage and how to avoid this sometimes-fatal mistake. According to the site “Self Sabotage” there are many characteristics that can give a tell that someone has a self-sabotage persona. Such as, a procrastinator, self doubt or putting ones self down, depression, trust issues, inability to finish projects, or worrying about what others think. When I think about self-sabotage I think about one age group and that is adolescents, teens, and young adults. The reason for this is because of school, as I am coming to graduate and the nearing days I can’t help but think about the goal I set for myself since I have started to school, graduate. Since I moved to Colorado in third grade I have been going to school with the same group of kids, roughly 200 to 250. However it has just set in that only 150 are graduating on Sunday, “where have those others gone?” might be a question thrown around. Although many have moved away or switched schools there also a few that have just quit, these are the kids that are affected by self-sabotage. I have seen this through my own eyes, whether the obstacle is a baby or just poor performance in school, those individuals give up at the slightest rough patch. They call it quits when they get embarrassed and think, “What do people think about me?” they do not pursue their goal or try to get help, they just throw in the towel. This is very common in high school, and even more common in college. “College?” you say, “but college is only for those individuals who are great academically, people who go to college are ready to learn.” If you think this you are sadly mistaken there are many students who drop out because of obstacles that seem insurmountable, but they don’t pursue or ask for help and they fail. A common between all failures in school is the personality of the person, each person just thought, “Well I can’t overcome this, I shouldn’t be in school,” but this is what gets people into trouble. They don’t believe they deserve to graduate and make a better life for themselves, they don’t try to overcome obstacles, they trust roll with them. That one bad grade isn’t the end of the world, you just need to try harder and learn from what you did wrong. An example in my life of this is my brother, he is a hard worker, and I feel can make it though anything. However, school and college was never easy for him. While in college he started off with D’s and other low grades, and he thought that he was a horrible student, this was him getting stuck in quicksand. What I mean by this is the harder he tried to fight the deeper he sunk, and the only way he was going to get out was to tell himself that he deserves to succeed and to pass college. This is one of those stories that doesn’t have a happy ending, in the end it became an insurmountable task.
This is the biggest difference between insightful setback and self-sabotage, how to deal with failure or obstacles. Insightful setback basically means to learn from your mistakes and don’t give up. While self-sabotage is the exact opposite, you feel that you don’t deserve what good things you have and when you meet a failure you feel that you deserve to fail. There are differences in the way people feel about themselves, as well. An insightful thinker will think about how to achieve their goal, they will overcome obstacles and learn from failure. A self-sabotage thinker will have four key characteristics. One, they will have a fear of success, two, unworthiness, or the feeling that you don’t deserve good things, this may be due to a poor self image or a low self-esteem. The third characteristic is the lack of ones belief in its own abilities, whether it is thinking you are not smart or that your goal is out of reach this is self-sabotage. The final one is not knowing your true desires, this goes along with college, such as choosing your major to satisfy your parents, or even people who work for paychecks and not for the love of the work. These are total opposites, each one has a new prospective on ways to deal with failure and obstacles, and each solution fall on different sides of the spectrum.
Both of these are similar in the way that they both deal with failures and obstacles, at some point in a person’s life they may be used, and both of which can always change. From “How to Turn Failure Into Success – The Way to Insightful Setbacks” it explains that both are ways to problem solving, however, one has a positive outcome and one has a negative outcome. A much bigger similarity though is that every person will end up using both at one time or another, whether you like it or not. There is such a broad description given by the article “Self Sabotage” that it is hard not to be considered a saboteur. No matter how well a person is at overcoming and succeeding they may sometimes fall under the spell of self-sabotage. This, however, leads into another similarity described in both articles. Not one of these outlooks is set in stone; you are always allowed to change. If you have a sabotaging outlook, this does not mean that you can not change, this only means that you may be digging yourself deeper, but you can always go back and take a new perspective on the situation. You should check yourself before you wreck yourself.
With these two articles, “How to Turn Failure Into Success – The Way to Insightful Setbacks” and “Self Sabotage” I would take the side of insightful setback because who wouldn’t want to always succeed in their efforts and reach whatever goals they set for themselves? Insightful setback or self-sabotage, take a look for yourself, drop the bad habits and look at your goals from the stand point that you deserve them, that you can overcome failures with your abilities and that you are worthy of success. Almos Alcott states, “We climb to heaven most often on the ruins of our cherished plans, finding our failures were successes.” heaven can be interpreted as being our goal and only by climbing up and over our failures can we ever hope to reach where we want to go. This quote by Colin Powell, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” Only those who fail and work hard to overcome that failure will be able to succeed, and those who give up after failure will never know what it feels like to achieve a goal. Failure can take two faces, your best friend or your worst enemy, but its your choice, insightful setback or self-sabotage. I believe that to be successful one must go through the hardships and overcome failure and obstacles.
“How to Turn Failure Into Success - The Way to Insightful Setbacks” and “Self Sabotage” these articles speak of the routes that can be taken to deal with failure or obstacles. They tell what is needed to do or what is needed to be changed, to either be insightful or be a saboteur. I will end with a quote by Leo F. Buscaglia, “We seem to gain wisdom more readily through our failures than through our successes. We always think of failure as the antithesis of success, but it isn’t. Success often lies just on the other side of failure.”

Daniel Polverari comparative essay

The Secret and The Miracle of Water
A nuclear missile exploding, a black hole, or a super nova, all of these things are very powerful, but think about your mind and your thoughts. Your mind is thought to be a driving force in nature; it can change everything around, both The Secret and Masaru Emoto say, if not something very similar, the same thing. The Secret tells of an all-powerful tool, that successful individuals have used throughout time, and that is your feelings and thoughts. Emoto’s research also points to one main thing controlling the make up of water, and that is thoughts. With our body being made up of 70 percent of water, it is clear that when you are in a good mood, the water in your body will be formed by those feelings, causing your whole body to feel great. But this also means when you are down and sad that the water molecules will change to that as well. The Secret and Emoto are basically one of the same in that thoughts control the things around you.
Masaru Emoto, the main researcher and writer of The Miracle of water, graduated from the Yokohama Municipal University while he studied International Relations. In 1992 he received certification from Open International University as a doctor of alternative medicine. While there Emoto was introduced to the concept of micro cluster water and magnetic resonance analysis. His work with water crystals has changed the way people think . . . about thinking. Emoto’s water crystal experiment is intriguing; he took samples from many different locations, and looked under a microscope to see the structure of the water crystals. He first collect water from pristine mountain streams, where little to know pollution had occurred, to polluted water. His tests evolved from being that of finding water and comparing them, to exploring what would happen if the water had love, hate, sadness, and many other feelings. His experiment showed that the test water that had love, happiness, and various others brighten your day feelings had water crystals that had a geometric and snowflake like shape to them. “Beautiful words have beautiful, clear vibrations. But negative words put out ugly . . . Language is not something artificial, but rather is something that exists naturally. I believe that language is created by nature” (Emoto, Masaru). While the horrible feelings, hate, sadness, I will kill you, all had similar structures to that of polluted water. “This principle is what I think makes swearing and slang words destructive. These words are not in accordance with the laws of nature. So, for example, I think you would probably find higher rates of violent crime in areas where a lot of negative language is being used” (Emoto, Masaru) His research showed that when water was exposed to feelings, they changed accordingly, that thoughts control the make-up of the things around you, and they can also change water molecules for the good or the bad.
Simple but powerful, this one phrase can describe the Secret. Rhonda Byrne’s movie explains the law of attraction, and how to use it in everyday life. The Secret seems simple enough, write it out or say it, believe in it, and receive it, three basic steps to using the Secret; however caution should be used with it. Although you can receive anything that is desired you can have a multitude of horrible things happen to you. The Secret works both ways when you think fun and happy thoughts, good things will happen to you, but if sadness or madness sets into the body, the events to follow will also be the same way. “You have two sets of feelings: good feelings and bad feelings, and you know the difference between the two because one makes you feel good, and the other makes you feel bad. It’s the depression, it’s the anger, it’s the resentment, and it’s the guilt. It’s those feelings that don’t make you feel empowered. Those are the bad feelings” (Nichols, Lisa).
Both Emoto’s experiment and The Secret reveal the same information about a power that cannot be matched. The mind can transform the simplest of things like water to the most complex things like your life. Emoto’s findings show that thoughts can change water to fit what feeling the water was introduced to. This goes hand in hand with the Secret because when we feel happiness our whole body feels happy and good events occur, but as we can see with the experiment, when horrendous feelings are felt the events to follow turn grim. The Secret says basically the same thing, when you are feeling up and at em’ your life is good, and nothing can go wrong, “It’s really important that you feel good, because this feeling good is what goes out as a signal into the universe and starts to attract more of itself to you” (Vitale, Joe). However when things go bad, it’s like quicksand, one thing goes bad, the next things goes worse, all until you are consumed by the quicksand. Both of these sources come from highly educated people in this area, they both believe that your emotions send off vibrations that can affect the things around.
The Secret and Emoto’s research are almost identical in theory, except that all Emoto has been tested on is water. However this simple experiment has basically proven that the Secret can work and is working every day. Our water-infested bodies are being affected right now by our thoughts, actions, and feelings, both the righteous and awful. Each one causing another event to occur down the path of good or bad. Whether you believe in it or not the law of attraction is working, it’s causing everything around you to happen. It is the deciding factor in whether you will be prosperous or if you will continue to wallow in the hole you have dug. For one I believe the Secret and that Emoto’s research is a great breakthrough in the way we view our lives. “We are all connected . . . There isn’t an “out there” and an “in here.” Everything in the universe is connected. It is just one energy field” (Assaraf, John)

Definition:Technology

Technology
Always changing and always moving forward, we are on our way to a future where new technologies await, where every generation will change the word, technology, bringing with them new meaning. There are some that believe that technology is improving society and others that believe it is harming society, either way technology is changing the world, “Technology does not drive change. . . it enables change” (thinkexist.com). I define the word, technology, by change; change is essential to technology and is why it’s dominant in the world today.
There are those who believe that change in technology is a necessity to humanity, that without it we would be next to nothing. When technology is looked at overtime it is seen that every invention discovered was then overlooked by a new invention. “Meet the Robinsons” says it the best; “keep moving forward.” when you are moving forward you can never fall behind. Advances have been taking place since humans first existed, since the first invention of clothing, and to the invention of the Internet. Most of those people who enjoy technology are in contact with it everyday and love the things it has helped to change, the Internet is a prime example of how technological change has changed people. When looking for information instead of going to the newspaper or talking to someone, it may be more prominent to get on the computer and search the web for a certain topic, this has allowed people to have more knowledge about a certain subject and become more informed.
Sure, there are people for change in technology, but let’s look at the other side of the argument when people want less technology. There are some like the Amish who do not believe in using technology, that it is not a necessity, and they go through life happy and satisfied. As well, there are others who think that technology should be taken away for other reasons. “All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness” ~Mark Kennedy (quotegarden.com). Those who believe this, think that the only reason that technology exists is so that humans don’t have to do as much work and that technology may one day rule the world. For example, cars can be interpreted in that they get us places faster, but what one can argue is that they cause global warming or even obesity. The computer is another example, with it we get information about numerous topics, but we loose the conversation, it used to be that people would talk to one another about events, but now there is no need for conversing. “Once a new technology rolls over you, if you’re not part of the steamroller, you’re part of the road” (thinkextist.com). What happens when humanity is no longer part of this “steamroller”, we become part of the road, we will be feeble in caparison to the machines we have created, and no longer be in control, we will be another factor in the equation, instead of the solution.
Technology can both be a friend and an enemy, but it’s all in how one interprets the meaning of technology, what one person thinks is a fantastic idea may be totally different in the mind of someone else. Technology like most modern day items can be helpful to us in ways never thought of. Nowadays, traveling is as easy as hopping on a plane and flying to any destination you choose whether another state or another country. This is so important since the world is connected in business and production industries, products can be transported in a matter of days and will help keep companies moving forward. The process for acquiring information has also changed, it’s as easy as getting on the computer and typing in one simple key word. For many this is a helpful asset to living and how they go about their day, but there are those who believe that technology is dangerous and should be lessened greatly.
An enemy is someone or something that strikes fear in one’s feelings, for some this is technology. With the growing advances in technology we the people may not be able to handle the responsibility that goes with it. One example happens to be Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the United States obliterated these two cities with no more than a push of a button, and with the advances in technology today we can do much more damage. “We've arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces ~Carl Sagan” (quotegarden.com). For one, in the bombings on Japan we never had any idea what was going to happen when we sent those missiles into the air, there was no telling what the consequences were going to be, but we still did it anyways. This is the kind of mindset that makes disaster inevitable.
I interpret technology in that it is something that is dangerous when in the wrong hands, it can make life easier, or even destroy it. By means of change, we should first learn how to control technology, allow us to get our feet wet, instead of jumping in. technology surrounds me, and this frightens me, although it makes life easier, it can also destroy me in a matter of seconds. “Technology... is a queer thing. It brings you great gifts with one hand, and it stabs you in the back with the other ~C.P. Snow, New York Times, 15 March 1971” (quotegarden.com). I would like to see change, but change in the reasons why we discover it, “Humanity is acquiring all the right technology for all the wrong reasons ~R. Buckminster Fuller” (quotegarden.com). Change is a good thing, but if we change the way we kill people, such as, missiles or nukes, we are being counter-productive in our efforts to move forward.
Technology is both helping and hurting humanity, there are people who see it as a friend and an as enemy, and until we learn how to control and use technology to help us, there will always be that fear to change and progress. The definition of technology is self-interpreted, each person refers to technology in different words, but think about it like this, technological change, yah sure, it will make life easier, but is it worth the consequences it may hold?

Definition:Technology

Technology
Technology, the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science (Dictionary.com). To me technology is defined as objects or a way of thinking that will make tasks and everyday life easier. Technology is human nature and is a reason why; we are where we are today.
Throughout time man has always been fascinated with new items that benefit us or that give us the upper hand on nature, from the first cave men, to where we are now, to the future, we will always have the need to improve our way of living, through the improvement of technology. When you first think of the word caveman you may think dumb or brute but the caveman was the first to discover technology, with the creation of the first clothing over a hundred thousand years ago (wikipedia.com). As well the first ever pottery or bowls were created about 30,000 years ago, things that we don’t really think of as being technology was once a great invention, but as newer technologies were produced the discovery was less glorified. Such as, now we take advantage of the technology we have, when people hear the word technology they may think of electronics, microchips, or computers, but this meaning changes through time, it used to be that there were no such thing as laptops or iPods, that the big thing might have been clothing, but each generation has its own interpretation of what technology is. Nowadays people think of laptops, iPods, or Blu-ray T.V. as technology, which is way different than what it used to be, and in the future people will forget about these inventions and focus on superior devices. When I think of future technology I picture Star Wars technology, where we can travel from planet to planet in spaceships or where we will have laser blasters or light sabers as weapons, and instead of nuclear missiles we will have the “death star”. Whatever the invention, whatever the time, the one thing that defines technology is the people.
Society has been impacted from technology immensely, without technology there is a chance we wouldn’t be standing here now. One case that sticks out in my mind is the first ever vaccine. In 1798 a scientist by the name of Edward Jenner discovered that when he injected cowpox into a person, that they became more immune to smallpox, his technological break through in immunology has saved more lives than all other scientists. His discovery changed the face of our society and the way we live, he made way for more discoveries in his field (About.com). Another more recent discovery has been the Internet, the Internet has molded our way of living and thinking, if you don’t know certain information you can go on the web and look up multiple sites on the subject. This has allowed the people to be more informed about the events that are happening around the world. However there are those certain people who refuse to use technology for one reason or another, such as the Amish, these people still go through life and enjoy it, but they don’t have those extras that people are used to having, like TV or computers. They still receive information and still have contact with people outside of their villages; the only difference is they don’t use technology.
In my life I am in contact with technology non-stop whether I am at school or in my house I am constantly around it. First of all, to get to school I drive a car to a place of learning each of which is a type of technology. When I get into school I see cameras, computers, desks, windows, tables, all of which you may not think are technology but, they are. I also have a class devoted to this certain subject where I learn the basics to using items such as the laser engraver and computers. At home I come in contact with technology, like television, computers, the X-box, my cell phone, and my iPod, all these impact my life greatly. Without these technologies I don’t know where I would be, I may be ill educated and ignorant or just flat out bored.
Technology is always changing and is always moving forward, we are on our way to a future where new technologies await and every generation will change the meaning of the word technology, bringing with them new more productive inventions, to change the world. “Technology does not drive change… it enables change” (Thinkexist.com). Without the advancement in technology we would never have advanced through time, without it we would be nothing, do you really think we would be where we are today if we didn’t have technology?Bibliography:

I can say with great accomplishment, that I was named the “Coolest Kid in School” by my second period Speech class. I was given this honor because I gave the most astonishing speech about why I am the “Coolest Kid.” I guess the class agreed with me when I told them that their coolness value could not compare to mine. This is what makes me differ from a normal engineer, although I love math and I am very good at it, I also like other classes like Speech and Debate.

School has been one of my biggest concerns and a strong point in my life. High school in my mind is very important if you wish to succeed in life, high school is the support beams of my building, without which you cannot hope to build new stories or grow. My whole high school career I haven’t focused on one single area, I have been open minded about other subjects that I have been interested in. School is an important part to succeeding in life and is an essential to me, as the support beams of my building.

I’ve had many influential people in my life but the two that have always been there, that have always helped me, has been my mom and dad. Since Civil Engineering is my passion, I relate my parents to being my strong foundation and support to my whole life or in this instance my building. My mom has been there for me giving me helpful advice and stressing the importance of college. My dad has been the person who first got me interested in engineering; and as an engineer himself, I always saw what he was doing, and it interested me, and it’s for this reason that I started to research engineering as my future. Each of them has contributed to me, each in a way has taught me how to be a good student and how to excel in life, and it is for this reason that I consider them my foundation for life.

My goal is to achieve an outstanding education in the field of Civil Engineering, at Colorado State University. I currently have already been accepted and have confirmed with them that I will be going there. My future as a person and as a student is still a little shady, but what I do know so far is that I will be attending CSU for Civil Engineering. I have already filled out all the paper work and I have already been accepted to live in the academic village, where only a select few of students may stay. After college I hope that I can start laying blueprints out and building for major companies. This can only happen with the right education, and for this I need some help financially with college and it is for this reason that I ask for this scholarship.
Throughout my life I hope to achieve and excel in engineering, I want to create plans for many buildings that will last a life time. I hope to leave a lasting impression on the world by means of the buildings I create.

Daniel Polverari

Most people think of an engineer as someone who cares solely about the maths and sciences; however, as an aspiring engineer I am interested in other classes too. Not only am I interested in the Liberal Arts but I am also very fond of baseball.

I can say with great accomplishment, that I was named the “Coolest Kid in School” by my second period Speech class. I was given this honor because I gave the most astonishing speech about why I am the “Coolest Kid.” I guess the class agreed with me when I told them that their coolness value could not compare to mine. This demonstrates how I may differ from a normal engineer, although I love math and I am very good at it, I also like other classes like Speech and Debate. My goal is to achieve an outstanding education in the field of Civil Engineering, at CSU. I currently have already been accepted and have confirmed with them that I will be going there.

I’ve had many influential people in my life but the two that have always been there, that have always helped me, has been my mom and dad. Since Civil Engineering is my passion I relate my parents to being my strong foundation and support to my whole life or in this instance my building. My mom has been there for me throughout my life giving me helpful advice and stressing the importance of college. My dad has been the person who first got me interested in engineering, as an engineer himself I always saw what he was doing, and it interested me, and it’s for this reason that I started to research engineering as my future. Each of them has contributed to me, each in a way has taught me how to be a good student and how to excel in life, and it is for this reason that I consider them my foundation for life.

School has been one of my biggest concerns and a strong point in my life. High school in my mind is very important if you wish to succeed in life, high school is the support beams of my building, without which you cannot hope to build new stories or grow. My whole high school education I haven’t focused on one single area, I have been open minded about other subjects that I have been interested in. While in school I have achieved a lot, I have held a 3.7 GPA throughout high school, as well I have been on the baseball team for four years, these and many other activities out of school like volunteering and youth group, has helped me become a member of National Honor Society, where I am the only male member, these achievements also gave me a chance to participate in Boy’s State. School is an important part to succeeding in life and is an essential to me, as the support beams of my building.

Through life I hope to leave a lasting impression on the world, by means of my buildings.
